WHY DO I DO WHAT I DO?

So why do I do what I do? Well it’s partly a great accident, as some of the best things are. My grandmother was the first person to take me to a cinema as a boy and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I remember it was like watching my dreams appear in front of me. I saw a double bill of Kes and Fantasia, a strange double bill perhaps? Watching Kes I felt I was watching something so real and close to me and I became lost in the story of this boy and his bird. Then during Fantasia I fell asleep and dreamed like I had never quite before. My father immersed me in his love of theatre and cinema at the Royal Court and NFT and my mother with her love of ballet, the anarchic, alternative and the arts as former ballet dancer and punk. So this fusion grew in me along with a great interest in literature, the future and technology. So here I am a passionate maker of wonderous things to ignite imaginations.

We shape our world and can shape our dreams to make it become what we believe it should be. In my job we can make real what is not, engage, move, touch and inspire people in such a powerful way they can escape for a moment, be faced with something or themselves in such a profound way that perhaps they will never see themselves or the world in the same way again. We can create change, make magic, wonder, people laugh, cry, remember themselves and what it is to be human. This is what I do.

In my personal work I like to not just entertain, but to challenge, provoke, and to connect people profoundly considering the innate nature of us human beings. I like to make audiences question their perceptions and beliefs be it through an issue, a visual grammatical approach or playing with perceptions. I like to work with the real and unreal, dream and reality, connecting people through powerful universal themes that reach deeper than our daily experience. The people in my work and stories are not perhaps just reflections of you and me and everyone we know, they are everyone we will never know if it were not for the silver screen the pad, the tablet or the Google Glass / chip you might wear or have embedded in the future. Cinema, Content and Transmedia Content is the space where we can play with our dreams, reflect on dilemmas, laugh, be riveted in fear or be lost in some magic and wonder.

PROCESS
As a director every film I make has a different process or approach. I work according to what is needed to create the experience intended or needed for the audience. My first question is how do I engage the audience powerful in the subject matter? When writing a piece of work for myself to make rather than a client, one thing that is a constant is that I often start with one single image or a series of images which keep coming to me that distils the story, the character, theme and the experience. Often these images and moments often come from experiences I have had, people I have met, and dreams. They are distilled to develop most profoundly what needs to be communicated and to get inside the viewer and to stay with them and and grow in them. That said I am also issue, character, theme and genre driven so there is a gentle marriage between a visual and more conventional themed genre approach

BEAUTY is in the eye of the beholder some people say. I like to think part my job is to find that beauty and wonder, where it lies in each subject I explore, then share that with the viewer or audience so they can find it, and perhaps even become lost in it. I find beauty in bleakness, in nature, landscapes, in the damaged, lost, stigmatized and dispossessed, as well as the more conventional traditional notions. So my work often explores social issues and the nature of being human to create change. As a result there tends to be a tension between beauty and bleakness in my work. I also have a love of travel and culture and what drives societies and cultures. I like to explore how they evolved from their environment both in terms of nature and social evolution. What makes communities, countries, continents and people bind or fall apart? The answer I find often is in history and our socio psychological make up, forming the root of our desires. I also like to play with comedy thus my viral work and I have a very deep interest in the future, science fact and fiction. Technology and the digital world shape our future and I am fascinated by technology and my mediums growth and change with technology. I often wonder if how we are embracing it will lead to us humans consumed by it, despite it’s potential to free us. In the end it is our choice and the leaders we elect who will determine if we are bound or blinded by it, rather than freed.
